San Antonio

Remember the Alamo!

While our children enjoyed the day at Six Flags Fiesta Texas riding some rollercoasters, Valentine, Gil and I did a historic tour downtown.

First we visited the Alamo.

This is a historic place that leads back to the independence war of Texas vs. Mexico. Unfortunately the need for backup was decided too late and so the Texans lost the battle and all soldiers were killed. But a few weeks later, Houston came over the Mexicans and won the final battle for independence.

As a personal fact: there was an Esparza on each side of the battle.

We also did the riverwalk. San Antonio was planned with a canal where you can walk along and have some food and drinks. I enjoyed seeing how Guacamole was prepared just in front of me.

Temperature and humidity lead us to drive to the Pearl. It was a biiiiig brewery and was refurbished in the last few years. Now there’s a hotel, a restaurant, a bar, a big garden for events …

Gil and I had a 4 flight of the new local brewery. For those who aren’t familiar with that phrase (as I was): you pick 4 types of beer you want to taste and get them in smaller glasses.

They had funny names: Darwin, Donkey, Putin and Coffee, and they all tasted different. As sides we had a pretzel and some oysters. I never had them before but I will have them again.

Our children were done with the rollercoasters and joined us. Together we listened to a lovely jazz gig in the park. I love this kind of living.

On our way to the nearby restaurant – yes, we actually walked there – we had a wonderful experience: thousands of bats were flying out of their „cave“ called highway bridge. Even though it was dusk we didn’t expect it.
